Inside of your mind and soul lies a complex universe of interconnecting thoughts and emotions. You are one of many, though unique- everyone has something to give, but might not have discovered what that is yet. Explore what is inside of you and inside of others, but be patient with yourself and with them. After all, it takes time, bravery and much preparation to travel the stars.
Today I watched a man take the first step he has taken in one year. He had a stroke- his legs are weak because he hurt himself the last time he tried walking, so he hadn’t done it since. He was scared, but he did it anyway. It reminds me of something my pastor once said- “When you are both afraid and attracted to something at the same time, jump into it” he said, in response to a recurring dream he had in which he was standing on a cliff. He learned to control his dreams, and he jumped off that cliff- and he flew.
Thanks to John Green for some perspective this evening.
“There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not, the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists, well, without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.”—Cameron, Modern family (via our-rights-our-wrongs)
“Who has cleft a channel for the flood, Or a way for the thunderbolt, To bring rain on a land without people, On a desert without a man in it, To satisfy the waste and desolate land And to make the seeds of grass to sprout?”—
I like to reflect on God as the current of electricity running through the machine that is the universe. Isn’t it a wonder, that everything works as it does- that we, as complicated as we are on the inside with our neural networks down to billions and billions of atoms, work as we do?
“If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we’ve got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”—Stephen Colbert
Free will is in part an illusion- we are influenced by the people we spend our time with, advertising, cultural norms, our biology. This could make one feel powerless… but being conscious of this feels like a powerful thing.
“Then that light, it’s your eye
I know, I swear,
We’ll find somewhere the streets
are paved with gold
Bullets fly, split the sky
But that’s all right, sometimes,
sunlight comes streaming through the holes…”—Coldplay, “U.F.O.”
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”—C.S. Lewis, “The Four Loves”
